Don’t Wait to Change the World

I have been volunteering my whole life.  I was raised in a family of volunteers. My first memory of my budding “community activism” was when I was about 5 or 6.  My mother and I drove past a busy intersection near my elementary school every day and I saw my classmates crossing the street holding hands and looking fearful.  I remember worrying every day about the kids that had to cross that street.  One day I told me mother that we needed to raise money and build a walking bridge over the street so the children would be safe.  I remember how good it felt to have a solution to a problem that I saw.

As I have gotten older, I have begun to believe that most of the world’s ills could be solved through proper education.  Thus, I have become more and more clear that my personal mission should be to remove barriers when and where possible to give children the best opportunities possible for a good education.  I am convinced such an education will lead them to better lives.

I encourage everyone to find their own passions and find a way to give of yourself to others. Accordingly, I wanted to recommend some books and websites that might inspire you and perhaps give you some ideas about how you can make a difference in others’ lives.  While you look for that place in the world where you can make a difference, please remember what one ordinary, yet very remarkable, young woman, knew:

“Isn’t it wonderful that no one need wait a single moment to begin to change the world.”
